A coat you fit in your pocket I am sure most of us could recommend a top-class lightweight jacket for training in, but usually the sting in the tail is the cost, as they range from reasonable to a month’s wages. However, AW Basics has found one that is not only reasonably priced at £29.95, but it is a terrific addition to the kit. Produced by Scottish-based firm Keela, the Neutronic is based on a very simple concept. It is so incredibly light and windproof that you can pack it away in its own pocket. AW Basics gave it a couple of trial runs recently when the wind was biting on the Cambridgeshire fens and it did its job superbly well. It has several strengths, but the major one is its weight, being only 4oz, and it is very easy to pack away and carry while running. As someone who has no option but to train on open fields and spaces there is the inevitability that any wind around will be battering my body, but this jacket certainly reduces the impact of those weather conditions. The Flylite fabric technology used in the jacket was originally developed by Keela for use in military survival suits. The Neutronic comes in a wide range of colours and not only does it serve a practical use, but it also looks very smart. We are sure there are many equally useful jackets around, but at this price we doubt many will be better value.
Tech Speak: Flylite ripstop fabric makes it only marginally heavier than a match, while being really durable and hardwearing. Pros and Cons: The lightest and most compact of the test and comes with its own stuff sack, so is ideal if pack space is limited. When on the fit is good and it’s surprisingly windproof. The scooped back makes the smock longer in length giving extra protection for the lower back.
The Lightest Jacket Ever? – Keela has developed a water resistant jacket that’s lighter than a bag of sweets. Weighing in at just four ounces, the Keela Neutronic smock is so neat and light, it folds up into a stuff sack that’s small enough to stick in your shirt pocket. It’s made from super light Flylite fabric, which gives protection against wind and light rain and is rip resistant.
I tested this jacket, initially as a mountain bike light weight wind top, and very quickly realised its potential for a number of adventure sports. The jacket was simple, well cut and most importantly super light. It has a better than anticipated resistance to rain and when used during a hill run was remarkably good when running through clouds. The jacket showed its further versatility when during the Edinburgh Rat Race I used it as a wind stopper during the kayaking leg on the River Forth! The Neutronic Jacket has the ability to perform well in almost all conditions and its super light weight and it’s ability to pack up to the size of a hanky, makes it an essential piece of kit for the multi adventure sports enthusiast.
