To remain comfortable while active in Scotland’s changeable winter weather, you often need a sweat wicking base layer, cosy fleece and an outer coat that is both wind and rainproof. With the Genesis jacket, Keela provides all this in one go. To be honest, it felt strange to go out in the rain with just a fleece coat on – but I remained dry and so cosy. It has a loose fit for ease of movement and additional layers, a snuggly neck baffle, handy zipped pockets, shock cords for nice fit at the hem and is fully protective that I won’t be going outdoors this winter in anything else.

The Genesis is yet another Keela product that’s not only packed full of features, but is great value and comes recommended by various Mountain Rescue Teams and Emergency Services. And on a purely aesthetic note, it also looks good and feels warm and snug in use. The Zetland 100 fabric is 100% waterproof, windproof and breathable and is very soft and comfy to the touch, and there are reinforcements at the shoulders and elbows. The fit allows plenty of room for movement and the very warm neck baffle and drawcord adjustable hem help to keep out draughts. With a lovely soft handle fabric but crisp packet rattle from reinforced areas, this is water resistant (with taped seams), fully lined for warmth and windproof, making it great for changeable conditions. You get two small warm lined side pockets, but no chest pocket. Cuffs are elasticated but easily rolled up for ventilation, there’s a hem drawcord, neck cinch and the length and fit are perfect. In a line: Good value, great for winter sports.

I have to admit, I’d never heard of a waterproof fleece before reviewing this but have delighted in telling anyone who will listen about it. It’s a fleece like any other; warm, cosy and comforting, but it’s also waterproof.

in mind… it’s waterproof, windproof, has a neck baffle, zipped hip pockets, shockcords at the hem and condensation control. And it works at low altitudes too.

This isn’t just a fleece, it’s a full blown suit of armour that serves as a reliable shield from the elements. And that’s because this thing’s not just warm , it’s waterproof too. We’ve been using it extensively through some wild North Wales weather and it’s been the ideal option to turn to.

It features an inner soft fleece, an outer soft fleece that has a bit more bulk to it, with the hydrophilic lining in between them also helping to lock in warmth and to fully block out the wind and rain. During our tests, we’ve found it to be about as warm as a mid to heavy weight down or synthetic insulated jacket.

OM editor and experienced gear tester Will said: “This is a very warm and comfortable fleece. The wet weather performance is excellent. The outer fleece fabric has good water resistance and water beads off it nicely so this along will see off light rainfall well. Once the heavy stuff arrives, that’s where the hydrophilic lining comes into action. This is actually also designed to pull moisture away from your skin and spread it across the fabric so it can evaporate more quickly, helping you stay dry and comfortable during activity. Does it work? I’d say so. I’ve not felt clammy when wearing the Genesis and it feels just like a thickly-layered fleece.”

The Keela Genesis also has a cinchable hem and a zipped front with a storm flap. There are two handwarmer pockets that are very cosy and then there's also a cord at the collar for locking in that extra bit of warmth. The cuffs are elasticated too, though a touch on the tight side. We are finding they are loosening a bit with time though.
