Independent.co.uk – “The stretchiest trousers that we tried, these ultra-flexible pants were amazing for hill walking, with a great blend of durability and breathability.”
The stretchiest trousers that we tried, these ultra-flexible pants were amazing for hill walking, with a great blend of durability and breathability. Four zipped pockets mean there’s plenty of space for keys and a phone, and the fit, along with the stretch, was among the best that we found.
The belt (which comes provided) and poppers at the waist mean you can keep them comfortably snug, while zips and tabs at the ankle make it easy to roll them up for ventilation, or to keep your legs dry through small puddles.
Outdoors Magic – “OM editor Will finds an impressive simple reliability in the Scuffer trousers from Scottish brand Keela”
“I wore these most days while out on our fortnight-long Outdoor 100 shoot in Snowdonia and I was really impressed by them. I like the fact that the fit is relaxed around the thighs and backside, basically bucking the current trend for figure hugging cuts. Most of the time, I kept the ankle cuffs nice and close around my boots but on the warmer days, I’d loosen these up to create a bit of extra airflow.
The water resistance was good enough to see out light rain though in heavy stuff the trousers did eventually saturate. The drying time is good though. With a bit of wind on a warm summer days these should go from saturated to dry within an hour.
That durability you want from a pair of outdoor trousers is certainly there. It’s not a particularly thick weave but the stretchiness to them does make them very abrasion resistant.
Advnture – “You certainly don’t need to be too precious about these pants – they will look after you on tough and technical terrain more than you need to look after them.”
Made with thick and fairly heavyduty materials, the Scuffers will – as the name suggests – take a fair beating on rough, rocky surfaces and still come back for more. You certainly don’t need to be too precious about these pants – they will look after you on tough and technical terrain more than you need to look after them.
The Scuffers come with a belt, but the waist (which does up with a popper) is also elasticated, so you can dispense with the belt in most circumstances, so long as you have got the correct size. There are three pockets – two on the sides and one on the bum, all of which are zippered for peace of mind when you’re carrying something vital in them. The leg ends open and close right up with a zipper and Velcro fastener, so you can fit any kind of boot on no matter how chunky it is.
The thermal properties are good on these trekking pants, but if things get a little too warm there is a mid-sized vent on each thigh, for dumping heat and letting in a breeze – and these are backed with mesh so your skin isn’t exposed. Made with a fairly large amount of spandex, they stretch impressively to give you a full range of movement when you need it.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS - "MY SCUFFER TROUSERS ARE OVER FOUR YEARS OLD AND HAVE BEEN WORN A GREAT DEAL, ALTHOUGH THEY DON'T SHOW IT".
My Scuffer trousers are over four years old and have been worn a great deal, though they don’t show it. I’m impressed enough with their durability to have included them in TGO’s round-up of Kit That Won’t Quit.
Keela Scuffer trousers are made from a thick heavy-duty four-way stretch synthetic fabric. It is rough on the outside but soft inside so they’re comfortable against the skin. The fabric is wind-and-water-resistant and very breathable – a necessity when spending the day outdoors doing manual work.
The seat is reinforced and there are big, rubberised patches on the insides of the ankles for protection against crampons and abrasion. The ankles also have short zips and Velcro tabs so they can be adjusted to fit over different types of boots. On the upper sides there are ventilation zips in case of overheating.
Live for the Outdoors – “I’ve had a pair for years and they are the hardest-working legwear item I own.”
I absolutely love my Scuffers: thick, tough, go-anywhere, through-anything companions that I’ve been grateful for many times. I’ve had a pair for years and they are the hardest-working legwear item I own.
Let’s get the negatives out of the way: they weigh a lot, and some will find the fabric scratchy. At 569g they are the heaviest pair here, but do a mile in them and pretty soon you won’t notice the weight at all. What you will notice is their sturdiness; the reinforced seat and the toughened patches around the hem that protect against nettle, thistle, igneous rock, Yorkshire heather and Sussex gorse. You’ll rejoice in the easily adjustable Velcro cuff that gives you the perfect fit around your boot, and the hip pockets that are deep enough to actually be useful (including a secret security pocket).
They can get hot on warmer days, but at least you get vents up the thigh to help with that. There’s also plenty of stretch through thigh and calf. They are by no means slimline, but if you don’t need an athletic look, you can’t go wrong with these – especially at this price.
BBC Countryfile – “These are true heavyweights”
While the outer surface is abrasive, these trousers are nevertheless soft next to the skin. These are true heavyweights – sharp rocks, bramble-choked paths and gorsy slopes are their friends. Windproof, waterproof, warm, stretchy and robust, they are perfect for rough days in wild weather.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS - "EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE AND VERY PRACTICAL".
These are light and loose trousers that are extremely comfortable and very practical for hiking in. They’re made from a lightweight and stretchy synthetic blend with reinforced panels on the in-step to prevent the fabric from crampon spikes. The ankle cuffs have Velcro adjustment tabs and zips, meaning you can open the base of the trousers up for ventilation. This also lets you adapt the trousers to fit over mountaineering or scrambling boots when required.
Outdoors Magic - "They feel very durable, with plenty of resistance to abrasion as well as a little stretchiness"
Scottish brand Keela is known for its no-nonsense gear, the kind of stuff that is right at home bagging Munros and tramping across the rugged landscapes of the Highlands. The Scuffers are well-proven outdoor trousers with a relaxed fit around the thighs and backside, basically bucking the current trend for figure hugging cuts. Adjustable ankle cuffs can be cinched in around boots or loosened to create a bit of extra airflow. They’re decently water resistant, fending off light rain, and though in heavy stuff the trousers will eventually saturate, they’re very quick drying. With a bit of wind on a warm summer day they’ll be dry within an hour.
They feel very durable, with plenty of resistance to abrasion as well as a little stretchiness. This makes them perfect for three-season use, and since the generous cut allows for layering, they could even be combined with baselayer tights underneath for full-on winter weather too.
