When hiking in the UK, gaiters are your friends. In summer, they keep midges and ticks away. On wetter days, they stop rain and mud soaking trouser hems and, in winter,  they prevent snow getting in boots. You can get cheaper gaiters, but it’s worth paying a little extra for pre-formed ones like these that fit snugly round your calves – or you’ll spend all day pulling them back up. They’re waterproof and breathable, with reinforced rip-stop ankle patches for rougher scrambling.
