These hiking socks from Keela are well-cushioned and my feet still felt comfortable after six hours of hard walking. But I was intrigued by the “insect shield” claim. This clothing treatment is, according to Keela’s website, proven to last through 70 washes on apparel, and uses permethrin to repel ticks, midges and other blood-sucking beasties. Ever the sceptic, I ventured out again, this time wearing an insect shield sock on my left foot, and a normal hiking sock on my right. I returned with several midge bites on my right ankle, but none on my left. Impressive.

Which do you hate more, mosquitoes or midges? It doesn’t really matter with these socks, as they’ll repel them all, as well as ticks, ants and flies. They’re also lightweight with a bit of extra cushioning in the footbed and ankle, and are made from the sustainable materials.
