THE SUNDAY POST - "FIRST-CLASS JACKET".

If you are looking for a rain jacket that folds into a pouch, stop here then. This fluorescent beauty (available in less flashy hues) is the handiwork of Scottish brand Keela. Keela know a thing or two about staying dry, and it shows in this versatile, first-class jacket.You get a lot of bang for your buck. The 3-layer Aquaflex fabric is thin and lithe, and it kept me dry whenever the skies opened, ‘breathing’ well on the go as well.The main, two-way zip is water repellent, as are those for the three roomy outer pockets, complemented by a fourth inside (annoyingly a little too small for chunkier smartphones).The hood is helmet compatible and so rather large – prone to catch the wind. Happily it’s also fully adjustable, but I had to pull all three shockcords quite tight for a snug fit.The wired peak helps keep vision clear too. The collar comes up fairly high, which was welcome in wind and driving rain, and the long, articulated sleeves gave my arms excellent freedom of movement.The Cairn is also very light and packs down small into its hood. My only qualms are the thin tabs on the zips, which proved slightly fiddly to grasp with wet gloves on.

Highly breathable, lightweight and waterproof, the Cairn waterproof is a very dynamic jacket that lends itself to a wide range of outdoor activities. It’s a dependable, three-layer hardshell that is light and packable. From our experience with Keela’s kit here at Outdoors Magic, they make some very good kit and offer excellent value for money.

I recently headed out into Eryri for some hiking, camping and gear testing and sported the Keela Cairn jacket as my outer layer. In true Welsh fashion, I faced a mixed bag of weather on the mountains including some seriously wet and windy days, a few chilly bluebird hikes, along with more humid forest hikes too. I was particularly impressed with the jacket’s performance in the Rhinogydd where the heavens really opened for a few hours in a sustained, slightly lashing, downpour.

At 308g, this thing is light for a three-layer waterproof. As such, I can see it working well for activities ranging from day hiking and three-season backpacking through to bikepacking and everyday wear. If you’re a quick hiker, I think this jacket will be right up your street. The active fit ensures a free range of movement while the impressive breathability and lightweight build is suited to high-aerobic outdoor activities.

For truly brutal weather conditions, I’d personally opt for something a little more protective, like the Keela Munro or the Keela Pinnacle for example. Paired with a warm base layer and mid layer, however, I think the Cairn offers great versatility for the majority of conditions. A great go-to jacket you can rely on.
