Fabric Technology
Flylite Ultra
Flylite fabric is designed to give superb wind resistance and excellent breathability – making it ideal for lightweight outerwear.
Primaloft
PrimaLoft is incredibly soft, lightweight and breathable with excellent water repellency so you remain dry, warm and comfortable, even under the most extreme conditions.
Ounce for ounce as warm as down, Primaloft microfibres are similar in size and shape to down, resulting in nearly equal insulating performance when dry and even better when wet.
Because its individual fibres are water repellent, Primaloft retains much of its ability to keep you warm, even when moisture has soaked through.
Reviews
Independent.co.uk – “A generous filling of ethical and recycled Primaloft (water-resistant, artificial down) and super soft synthetic fleece panels and pockets make it instantly warm.”
It’s almost impossible to find a warm waterproof that you don’t need to layer-up, but Keela has come close with this Primaloft jacket. It’s not waterproof – Keela says water-resistant – but we put it through a thorough shower test, and the shell shed all the water we could throw at it without any seeping through to the lining or – from what we could tell – effect on the loft. A generous filling of ethical and recycled Primaloft (water-resistant, artificial down) and super soft synthetic fleece panels and pockets make it instantly warm. It’s the perfect jacket for spring and autumn.
Outdoors Magic – “A cosy jacket with an impressive fill, great features and all at a very decent price”
Who Is The Keela Talus For?
This is a jacket for anyone who ventures into cold and wet places. We can see it as being a great option as a standalone insulator during the warmer months, something to sling on on a windy summit or when the sun starts to set while you’re at camp. Then come winter, it’ll work excellently as part of a layering system. Scottish mountaineers should particularly like that aspect of it.
Materials and Construction
60gsm of PrimaLoft Gold synthetic insulation is used right across the jacket, including in the collar and hood. It’s actually been carefully zoned as well, so the bulk of it in the torso and then there’s a slightly lighter fill in the arms so that your movement isn’t hindered at all.
Now, the great thing about PrimaLoft Gold is that it basically brings the same kind of feel and performance as down, with an excellent warmth to weight ratio and lovely lofty feel. It even has a bit of an edge over down when it comes to wet weather use, because while standard down will flop and become useless with a bit of rain, PrimaLoft Gold will still carry on insulating, even when it’s absolutely soaked. What’s more, at least 50% of this fill is made from recycled content, more specifically, plastic bottles diverted from landfills.
Then there’s the outer shell fabric which, despite feeling very light actually has a surprising durability to it. That’s all thanks to the Cordura fibres that make up the ripstop thread within it – a seriously impressive touch, that.
Stretchy fleece-lined panels then line the sides of the torso and under the arms to add a bit of extra comfort and to aid the overall temperature regulation as well.
Testers Verdict
Will Renwick, editor of Outdoors Magic
“This is exactly the kind of insulated jacket that I look for – one that’s made for the normally rather wet conditions we get in the UK. You see, on a typically wet day here, you’re going to get damp no matter how good your waterproof jacket is, normally because moisture starts to seep in around neck, and it’s this inevitability that makes me prefer synthetic insulation to down. With an insulated fill like PrimaLoft Gold, you can accept that while you’re going to get wet, at least you’re going to still be kept warm – and that’s not usually the case with down, unless it has some impressive hydrophobic treatment.
Adventure.com – “The Talus is the workhorse of our round-up of the best women’s down jackets”.
The Talus is the workhorse of our round-up of the best women’s down jackets and puffer jackets. Its ripstop outer material is far more resistant to tears and scratches than most down jackets (which can often rip at the slightest brush with a thorn) and you can tell this jacket was designed in Scotland, where four seasons in a day are likely – we found it water-resistant enough to put up with sudden rain, and it still offers warmth when damp, and dries quickly. It’s also windproof enough to cut chill, making it a great standalone jacket on warmer days. Flexible, fleece-lined panels run all the way up the inside of the arms and offer great freedom of movement; coupled with a lighter dose of synthetic insulation, these make the Talus ideal for sports. A reinforced peaked hood keeps water and sun out of your eyes and is also compatible with a helmet. The Talus’ fit runs small, and we’d advise going up a size if you want to wear more than a base layer underneath. Keela Talus women’s down jacket review: a hardworking jacket for challenging weather
Independent.co.uk – “a great pick”.
We love the subtle look of this hooded talus, which is insulated with synthetic insulation (primaloft gold) but doesn’t have the Michelin Man-style that most down mid layers have. The use of primaloft gold insulation, which is effective even if wet, combined with a windproof outer material means this is ideal for use in environments that are open to the elements. The jacket will also still trap in some heat even if you do get caught in a storm. If you’re looking for a mid layer that can work as an outer jacket in most conditions, this is a great pick.
GOOD HOUSEKEEPING - "THIS TALUS IS THE DREAM FOR ALL YOUR OUTDOOR ADVENTURES".
It features fleece-lined panels and advanced insulation tech to keep you supremely warm, without having to wear a million layers. It also has elasticated cuffs and a reinforced peaked hood to keep the rain out.
Despite the high level of insulation, our panel found it was surprisingly lightweight and allowed them full freedom of movement while exercising. Details including toggle strings for a tighter fit and fleecy side pockets for extra warmth earned it additional brownie points. “It’s one of the best jackets I’ve ever hiked in,” commented one tester.
Camping With Style – “the Flattering & Versatile Keela Talus Jacket”.
Although generally a 14, I chose the 16 as with a big bum and fairly wide hips, I usually have to go up as much as two dress sizes with jackets. The Keela is a good fit throughout the body including the waist, arms and chest but does fit snugly around my hips. Thanks to the stretchy side panels however, the jacket doesn’t feel at all restrictive and those panels also help to further reduce the bulk of the jacket. Over the past few weeks I’ve found the jacket to be extremely versatile; it packs down to a really small size and on cooler summer walks I’ve found it to provides the ideal extra layer. I’d like to say a big well done to Keela for their colour options. Although I am one of those women who loves pink, and the brighter the better, a lot of outdoorsy ladies really dislike the narrowly gendered colour options often available and many outdoor brands seem to assume all women want bright colours and vibrant prints. The Talus comes in 4 different slightly muted colours, all of which – despite my love of everything bright – I find appealing, so it feels like their colour choices are spot on and will appeal to most.
The pockets (2 on the outside, one on the inside) are all good sizes and the zip pulls are easy to grab and use. The cuffs are gathered slightly to stop wind whooshing up your sleeves, without them being tight and the hood is a good size and is helmet-friendly and easily adjusted.I really like this jacket and I especially adore the colour! It adds warmth without bulk and protects against rain showers too. On long hikes I tend to get quite warm, so for spring and autumn hikes a lighter jacket like this is perfect for adding enough warmth but without making me overheat.Although snug on the hips, I do like the fit of this jacket and the way it looks on. The lack of bulk means that on cooler summer walks I’ve found this jacket is ideal. If you like to layer and already have a fully waterproof outer that you like, then the Talus is great for use as a mid-layer in very cold weather. Camping with Style
Fiona – “It’s a great design with the weightier Primaloft insulation where you need it”
Keela is a Scottish company and was founded some 25 years ago on the east coast in Fife. I have tested a few Keela products and I like the latest, the Keela Talus Primaloft jacket. It’s a good solution for mid or outer layer wear depending on the temperature and season.
My thoughts: Keela Talus Primaloft jacket
The fit is really nice. I have the women’s UK10 and I would say it is a generous fit but it’s not too neat, nor too loose. The stretchy section down the sides and under the arms provides a great freedom of movement. It’s a great design with the weightier Primaloft insulation where you need it, in the body and arms, while other areas have lighter weight fabric. This means the jacket is warm but no heavier than it needs to be. I have worn the jacket in different temperatures – deliberately wearing it on colder evenings – and I like the warmth to weight ratio. Primaloft insulation is also synthetic so it works to keep you warm even when its wet. Note: The water resistant treatment will keep out light rain but heavy Scottish style rain will soak through. Even when this happens, synthetic fill will keep you warm-isa, while down gets soaked through and cold. The outer fabric looks and feels robust. It’s quite shiny so some people might not be so keen on the look but I really like it. The look is smart but practical. I have the purple jacket and it’s a great colour. Other nice features include the fleecy inner to the stretch fabric sides. These are soft and cosy. The hand pockets also have fleece inners, too. This feels great against bare skin and also makes the pockets feel cosier when it’s chillier. The hood is great for extra warmth and is easily adjustable. I like the bendy (malleable) peak. The features list the zip as two way but this is not the case with my jacket. That is odd. This is a jacket that I will wear when I’m out and about, taking the dog for a walk or going to the pub, as well as an item for packing in my walking rucksack.
