WHAT TO PACK FOR A WINTER HIKE: THE ULTIMATE COLD-WEATHER HIKING CHECKLIST

Hiking in the colder months is one of the best ways to enjoy quiet trails, crisp air, and dramatic landscapes. Whether you’re out on a chilly autumn afternoon or a frosty winter morning, the right gear makes all the difference between a refreshing adventure and an uncomfortable struggle.

If you’re wondering what to pack for a winter hike or cold-weather walk, here’s a complete checklist to help you stay warm, dry, and safe when temperatures drop.

1. LAYER UP AND KEEP IT DRY

When hiking in cold weather, layering is essential. You’ll want a breathable base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer. This setup lets you adjust easily as conditions change.

Top Tip: Keep your spare layers inside a dry bag. Even “water-resistant” backpacks can let moisture in, and nothing ruins a hike faster than damp clothing. Explore our full breakdown of the best cold-weather layering systems here.

2. HATS, GLOVES, AND SPARES

Your hands, head, and feet lose heat faster than you think. Always pack:

Having extras is key - especially if your first pair gets wet from snow, rain, or sweat.

3. WATERPROOF AND WINDPROOF OUTER LAYERS

Even on dry days, wind and drizzle can chill you fast. A waterproof jacket and trousers provide vital protection - they also act as wind barriers, helping to trap warmth and keep you comfortable on exposed trails.

4. STAY HYDRATED - AND WARM!

As temperatures drop, drinking water can feel harder because cold drinks aren’t as appealing and you might not notice your thirst. Hydration is still essential for energy and focus. Anna Danby suggests carrying a thermos of hot juice, a cosy way to keep fluids up and spirits high on cold days.

5. HEAD TORCH

Daylight fades quickly in the colder months. Carrying two head torches is often easier than changing batteries on the trail, especially in foggy conditions or if your hike takes longer than expected. Trust us, it makes a big difference for safety and peace of mind.

6. FIRST AID KIT

Pack a compact first aid kit with essentials like blister plasters, painkillers, bandages, and personal medication. Cold conditions can slow response times, so being prepared for small injuries matters even more.

7. BLIZZARD BAG OR EMERGENCY BLANKET

Kirsty Pallas recommends carrying a blizzard bag over a foil blanket - it’s bulkier, but significantly warmer. If you or someone in your group needs to stop or wait for help, this can make a huge difference.

8. SIMPLE SHELTER OR BOTHY BAG

A lightweight emergency shelter or bothy bag offers protection from wind, rain, or snow, and provides a cosy space to take breaks, manage an emergency, or even have lunch. It’s one of those items you hope you never need but are grateful to have.

9. WATERPROOF PHONE CASE AND POWER BANK

Phones are vital for maps, communication, and emergencies - but batteries drain fast in cold weather. Use a waterproof phone case and pack an extra power bank so you can always stay connected and find your route.

10. MAP, COMPASS, AND NAVIGATION SKILLS

Don’t rely solely on GPS. Always carry a map and compass, and make sure you know how to use them. If your phone or GPS dies, traditional navigation skills will need to be your backup. Learn how to use a map and compass here.

11. GPS TRACKER OR SATELLITE COMMUNICATOR

In remote or low-signal areas, a personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite communicator is an invaluable piece of safety gear. It allows you to send your location or an SOS message even without mobile coverage.
