Layering Systems Explained: Finding Confidence in the Outdoors

When heading into the hills, being confident in your kit is just as important as knowing your route. The right clothing system helps you stay comfortable, regulate your temperature, and remain protected when the weather changes.  The most effective way to do this is by using a layering system. As part of our Within You campaign with Mountaineering Scotland, we explored how preparation and the right kit can help you feel confident and capable outdoors. Here, we’re taking a closer look at the layering system our campaign ambassadors used, and sharing the garments they wore throughout the campaign.

Why Are Multiple Layers Better Than One?

Your clothing keeps you warm by trapping air between each layer, creating insulation. Wearing several lighter layers instead of one thick one allows multiple air pockets to form - meaning if heat escapes from one layer, it’s caught by the next.

Layering also gives you far greater control over your temperature. You can easily add or remove layers depending on how hard you’re working or how the weather changes. A single thick jacket might feel warm at first but offers little flexibility - leaving you too hot on the climb and cold when you stop.

Base Layers

The base layer sits directly against your skin, and its main job is to wick moisture away. When you’re active, sweat builds up quickly. If that moisture stays trapped next to your skin, you’ll cool down fast once you stop moving, which can quickly lead to discomfort or even hypothermia in cold conditions.

Kirsty and Anna wore the Merino Round Neck throughout the Within You campaign for its comfort, breathability, and moisture-wicking performance. The Merino fabric is lightweight, insulating, antibacterial, UV resistant, and exceptionally comfortable to wear next to the skin.

Mid Layers

The mid layer provides warmth by trapping air close to your body while still allowing moisture to escape. This layer can range from a lightweight fleece for milder days to an insulated jacket for colder or more static conditions.

Options such as the Nairn Fleece provide lightweight insulation and layering versatility, while the Solo or Talus Jackets offer more substantial warmth with Primaloft® insulation - ideal for colder conditions or periods of lower activity.

Outer layers

The outer layer protects you from wind, rain, and snow. Its role is to keep the elements out while allowing moisture from inside to escape.

The Cairn, Pinnacle, and Stratus Jackets were used throughout the campaign - designed to offer reliable waterproof, windproof, and breathable performance across a wide range of conditions.
